Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001, but was disbanded by the Abbott brothers in 2003 amid communication problems and their conclusion that Anselmo would not return to the band.

The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan , while Anselmo continued work on several side projects, including Down in which Rex Brown joined as well. On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio , permanently ending hopes for a reunion. The band has sold more than 6 million records as of August 2017. [2] [3]

1986 and 1987 saw the release of several landmark thrash metal albums that would prove influential to Pantera’s developing musical style. Among the most prominent of these were Metallica ’s Master of Puppets , Slayer ’s Reign in Blood , Anthrax ’s Among the Living and Megadeth ’s Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? Disturbed (formed 1996) is an American heavy metal band that has been edging closer to aesthetic of hard rock since their debut “The Sickness” in 2000, hailing from Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

Originally comprised of vocalist Erich Awalt, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmat, the band was initially named “Crawl” and subsequently “Brawl”. The group recorded an early demo tape, however shortly after its completion singer Awalt left Brawl, and the remaining members advertised for a new frontman. David Draiman was one of the only respondents to the band’s advertisements, however proved a perfect match and was hired on the spot. In 1997, now settled on the name Disturbed, the band recorded a pair of demo tapes, featuring the songs, “The Game”, “Down with the Sickness”, and “Stupify”.

The demos led the band to sign with Giant Records, who issued Disturbed's debut studio album “The Sickness” in 2000. Catapulting the band to heavy metal notoriety, the record peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200, selling over four million records. In support of the record Disturbed were invited to open for Marilyn Manson on his European tour, during which time time Kmak was temporarily replaced by Marty O’Brien. To raise the publicity and anticipation for their sophomore album, in June 2002 the band released the documetary DVD “M.O.L.”. Three months later Disturbed released their second studio album “Believe”, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 led by the single “Prayer”.

The Internet has put a premium on great live performers. Ever since the three hit combo of file sharing, digital sales, and streaming knocked the music industry on its ass, having a strong live presence is essential for any band trying to make a career for themselves. When your fans can sit at home and binge your entire discography on YouTube in their underwear for free, you better bring it on stage if you want them to shell out for tickets, gas, and drinks at the local rock club. Great live shows can turn strangers into fans and casual listeners into diehards. Conversely, if a band lays an egg on stage, you might never be able to listen to their records the same way.

As someone too young to have caught Neurosis at Ozzfest 1996 in person, I’ve always found their inclusion on the bill a bit baffling. Sure they were a rising metal band that had just hit their creative peak, but they were also an exceedingly weird bunch by ’96 standards. Their use of electronic programming and emphasis on percussion may have made them superficially similar to the alt metal scene that was in vogue at the time, but Neurosis had no interest in making you jump the fuck up. Quite the opposite, if this performance of “Locust Star” from that tour is any indication; they were there to reign down on you.

It’s hard to overstate just how wonderful it was to be a thrash fan throughout the 2000s. The number of bloodthirsty releases from the old guard in this time seemed endless, with the likes of Death Magnetic , Endgame , and Ironbound proving that the veterans were back and hungry for blood. Exodus were at the forefront of this wave, attacking small clubs with regular ferocity and frequently pumping out new material that pushed the boundaries of their sound.
