LOS ANGELES (AP) — Only in the modern era of superhero films could a $96 million opening weekend be considered anything less than impressive. But that's the situation Warner Bros. and DC's "Justice League" find themselves in.

The big budget superhero mashup came in well under expectations, which had pegged it for a $110 million launch in North American theaters. If studio estimates hold, it will also have the dubious distinction of being the lowest-opening film in the DC Extended Universe.

It has been a rollercoaster for the DC Universe since "Man of Steel" kicked off the comic book franchise in 2013, with films battling high expectations, critical reviews and the impossible standard of competing against the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" may have been a critical dud in early 2016, but it still opened to $166 million and went on to net $873.3 million worldwide by the end of its run.

" DC One Million " was a crossover storyline that ran through a self-titled, weekly limited series and through special issues of almost all "DCU" titles published by DC Comics in November 1998 . It featured a vision of the DC Universe in the 853rd century (85,201–85,300 AD), chosen because that is the century in which DC Comics would publish issue one million of their comics if they maintained a regular publishing schedule. The mini-series was written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Val Semeiks .

In the 853rd century the original Superman ("Superman-Prime One million") still lives , but has spent over fifteen thousand years in a self-imposed exile in his Fortress of Solitude in the heart of the Sun in order to keep it alive, during which, everyone he knew and loved died. One of his descendants is " Kal Kent ", the Superman of the 853rd century.

The galaxy is protected by the Justice Legions, which were inspired by the 20th-century Justice League and the 31st-century Legion of Super-Heroes , among others. Justice Legion Alpha, which protects the solar system , includes Kal Kent and future analogues of Wonder Woman , Hourman , Starman , Aquaman , The Flash and Batman . Advanced terraforming processes have made all the Solar System's planets habitable, with the ones most distant from the Sun being warmed by Solaris, a "star computer" which was once a villain but was reprogrammed by one of Superman's descendants.
